Our first President lavished this late 18th-century status symbol on his Virginia home, Mount Vernon. The West Parlor was painted a bold robin’s-egg blue and the large dining room was treated to a rich emerald verdigris with blue undertones. An evolution from the log cabin, the Colonial house is characterized by simplicity, often built out of brick or wood with two or three stories stacked in neat symmetry. Most Colonial houses have the kitchen and living room on the first floor with the bedrooms on the upper levels, with dormer windows and a chimney punctuating the roofline. For larger homes, such as this newly constructed Colonial, a light- or medium-range earth tone will complement the natural surroundings without overwhelming it. Here, the addition of a blue-green accent hue on the front door and shutters further links the home with the landscape.
